What can Jambi do for me?

Jambi will work closely with you to convert your designs to a perfectly functioning website, bringing knowledge and skills to the table that you may not have in-house. This includes writing code, as you’d expect, but also being your technical sounding board for any questions you or your client may have about how websites work, are put together, and used. We will also be on hand to expand the website as your client’s business grows.

This means you can offer a ‘full website’ service to your clients, increasing your chances of winning any branding or design bid, and focus on doing what you do best: designing, while we look after the technical nitty-gritty. Ultimately this results in happier clients for you, bigger projects, and a wider portfolio.

So how much does it cost?

Our standard hourly rate is £50, however we appreciate that this only tells half the story. If we take a typical project – building a bespoke WordPress website to your designs – we say that we’d need at least three days to get something up and running (that’s £1200+VAT). Proper example coming up…

For a project consisting of the following, we’ll be needing more like eight days (£3200 +VAT):

Some kind of portfolio or project section. This can work in a similar way to the blog with categories and tags, though may have a different look and feel

A bespoke homepage

Some data capture forms

A fully-fledged blog area with all the usual functionality – categories, tags, authors, all presented exactly as per your designs

An online training session to get you and/or your client up to speed with the website and how to manage day-to-day content editing of the site

Collection of blocks that can be used on secondary content pages, such as ‘About Us’, ‘Our Clients’, ‘Meet the Team’ etc… Usually it’s around twelve blocks all in

A decent SEO foundation. This includes things like installing Google Analytics, adding meta-data to all pages, creating a sitemap, and registering the site with Google Search Console

How can it go wrong?

When creating a website there is always a balance that has to be made between the technical implementation and complexity of the designs. Time and financial budgets would need to be factored in too. Focusing on the former, you may wish to design something that has some kind of unforeseen technical consideration. A classic one is responsiveness – a design of yours may work brilliantly on desktop devices but may be unusable on mobiles.

We have a whole bunch of experience with this and are able to spot these sorts of issues early and advise on the best cause of action from the get-go. Remember, we’re here to help with these kinds of things even before the design phase has kicked off.

Time and budget often require some compromise too, as you no doubt know. We are often asked to help scope website projects to a particular budget. We can advise on how to get the best bang-for-your-buck, what the websites’ must-haves should be, and what sort of aspects could potentially be left to version 2.0.

What are my alternatives?

The most obvious alternative would be to employ a web developer in-house. This could very well be your long term goal, but has a number of business implications to consider of course. If we can help bridge that gap and provide a great service before handing over to your in-house team we will consider that an enormous success for both of us.

Alternatively, you could offer to design a website for your client, but state you can’t help with the development of it. This would put quite a strain on your client, as they would be armed with designs for a website without a full understanding of what to do with them. And this could compromise your creative vision, too. We find that having design and development working together from the get-go makes for a much smoother project.

Another thing you could do is offer to build the site yourself on a platform like Squarespace or Wix. These are great platforms – an excellent product with superb customer service, and a lot of clever stuff going on under the hood. However, compared to a bespoke site, they are hugely inflexible, and you won’t be able to dictate the aesthetics and functionality of the site as you may need to.

There are lots of other web developers out there as well who you could work with. However, very few specialise in working directly with creative agencies and individuals. Simply put, when it comes to web dev, we know what you and your client need even better than you do.

Are Jambi good?

Yes. We have some wonderfully happy customers and some great websites in our portfolio. We’re so confident in fact that we never ask for full payment on a project until the site has been live for a while. This means that if you and your client aren’t totally happy, then we don’t get paid.

What do you need from me?

If we were to work together on a project we essentially need two things from you: the website designs and some of your time. Usually designers hand over the designs as created in Adobe XD. Figma and Sketch are also used, but Adobe XD seems to be the industry standard. By this point we would be close enough to the project to know how it all works and would have perhaps seen the evolution of the design, so we shouldn’t need much more than that to kick off the development phase, however, if we do need to clarify anything we’ll be in touch.

Typically designs will just show how a website should look on desktop and we’ll be tasked with ensuring that the site is fully responsive on mobile devices based on best practices and general common sense. However, if you did want to provide some mobile designs that’s totally fine too.
